Praia a Mare Calabria
From ancient village inhabited by fishermen and farm workers to today’s much-loved seaside resort
Fine sand and pebble beaches, a dramatically beautiful, indented coastline, sea beds inhabited by gorgonian, starfish and numerous species of fish; these are just some of the characteristics which have made Praia a Mare one of Calabria's most popular tourist destinations.
The town of Praia a Mare, not far from Maratea and the borders with Italy's Basilicata and Campania regions, lies within the National Park of Pollino. Fans of Extreme Sports have the opportunity to go rafting or canoeing over the rapids of the nearby Lao river.
Not to be missed whilst in Praia a Mare, a trip to the Island of Dino, just South of the town and directly opposite Capo dell'Arena. This imposing spur of rock, inhabited by Primula Palinuri, a protected species of flower, amongst the oldest in the whole of Italy, is famous for its many sea caves. The Praja World Festival is the name which has been given to the international ethnic music review held here each summer, event which showcases a stream of both established and emerging artists.
