Palazzo del Capo introduction
Hotel Palazzo del Capo, in Cittadella del Capo is immersed in the enchanting scenery of the bay of Capo Bonifati, on a spur of rock reaching directly in to the beautiful Tyrrhenian sea.
The original medieval body of the building was continually expanded and altered until reaching its current form in the 18th century. Over the centuries, from humble fortified trading post the building was transformed into the palatial seaside residence of the aristocratic De Aloe family who planted an extensive vineyard stretching up towards the Calabrian mountainside and, in the immediate vicinity of the building, created a 3000sqm of walled garden to contain an orchard of citrus fruit trees and flowers.
Following the unification of Italy, the first railway line linking Battipaglia with Reggio Calabria was built along the Tyrrhenian coastline making the maritime connection between Cittadella del Capo and Naples completely obsolete.
The area saw a period of gradual decline, until the arrival of tourism in the Calabria. In 1985 the palazzo was declared by ministerial decree "a site of notable artistic and historic importance". In 1987 restoration work began, concluded in 1991 when the 5 star Palazzo del Capo hotel was inaugurated.
The hotel has 18 sumptuously furnished and spacious bedrooms and suites leading on to delightful balconies.
The restaurant of Palazzo del Capo serves the finest Italian and local Calabrian specialties in the hotel's magnificent dining rooms. The well stocked wine cellar offers guests the opportunity to taste only the very best Italian wines.
Palazzo del Capo's refined service and stunning public rooms and grounds make the hotel an idyllic seafront venue for wedding receptions, banquets and high profile meetings.
